Product Owner

Location: Vancouver, BC
Date Posted: 11-20-2017
On behalf of our Vancouver based client, Affinity Staffing is looking for a Product Owner, (Jr / Int) for immediate start on full-time permanent basis. The role is effectively Product Owner in the Scrum Guide. But in general, they work in a pragmatic Lean-Agile way.

Top Criteria:
  • Own maximization of product value for customers.
  • Own Product Backlog of multiple Feature Teams.
  • Self-starter and problem-solver.

The Dev Team structure has recently pivoted to Feature Teams, each with their own Product Backlog. We seek disciplined ownership to wrangle those Backlogs. The role is not a leadership role at this time (but could grow toward leadership depending on candidate). Years of work experience is less important than skill set, attitude, work ethic, self-starting, learning capability, etc. But let’s say 2+ years. While we are interested in what people have actually done, we are more interested in what they are capable of doing. And we like to keep an open mind, so as not to pre-filter out too many people.

Company:
Our client's solution is an application suite of cloud-based PaaS services deployed globally on the Azure platform. It includes a fully-managed API on top of multiple services including:
  • Asset search
  • Media processing
  • Basic orchestration / event management
  • Federated cloud storage
  • Sharded elastic scale data persistence
  • Identity, authorization, and policy management / enforcement
We deliver our solution using a Lean-Agile approach, and pride ourselves on being capable of deploying to live production every day.

Role Responsibilities:
  • Own maximization of product value for customers.
  • Own Product Backlog of multiple Feature Teams.
  • Collaborate with domain experts, executives, and techies to create, slice, and rank stories & bugs for Product Backlogs.
  • Effectively Product Owner in the Scrum Guide.
Must-Have Skills / Experience:
  • Self-starter and problem-solver.
  • Seeker and socializer of knowledge.
  • Technical background, ideally in software development.
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written, in English.
  • Comfortable communicating and collaborating with executive-level leaders.
  • Team-oriented, results-based attitude and work ethic.
  • Work with limited supervision in a startup-like environment, take initiative, perform due diligence, and raise issues transparently.
Nice Skills / Experience:
  • Writing BDD / ATDD feature scenarios, i.e., Gherkin (Given... When... Then....).
  • Microsoft Azure cloud stack Aha, Jira, Confluence
Accountable to:
  • Work as part of a team to achieve common goals in support of quality products.
  • Complete projects assigned by Senior teammates or Leaders.

  • Quickly absorb, understand, and resolve complicated technical issues.
  • Receive constructive criticism.

Must Possess:
  • Desire to learn new technologies and an overall passion for technology.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with a proven ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and customers.
  • Articulate with a solid technical and non-technical vocabulary.
  • Highly organized with ability to identify priorities and handle shifting needs.
